Why None of the 2024 Primaries Be Canceled

Primary elections are a fundamental component of the democratic process in the United States. They serve as a preliminary round in the elect، system where members of one political party select their candidates for the upcoming general election. They play a critical role in the American political landscape by allowing party members to have a direct say in w، will represent them and their values on the ballot.

With Nikki Haley having recently stepped down from the Republic primary, former President Donald T،p stands as the only major candidate for the GOP. Voters are thus left wondering if states will cancel their Republican primaries — they’ve certainly done it before: just last presidential election.

The 2020 Primary Cancellations

In 2019, Alaska, Arizona, Kansas, Nevada, and South Carolina all canceled their Republican primaries or caucuses. The states argued that since almost 90% of the Republican party had given him a positive approval rating, it was unnecessary and wasteful of money to ،ld a primary election. South Carolina’s Drew McKissick, the Chairman of the GOP, justified the decision by stating: “With no le،imate primary challenger and President T،p’s record of results, the decision was made to save South Carolina taxpayers over $1.2 million and forgo an unnecessary primary.”

While most of the states in question cite cost savings as the motivation, the moves were more likely designed to consolidate the party behind then-President and in،bent candidate Donald T،p. Canceling the primaries would allow the GOP groups in these states to throw all of their support behind T،p and thereby allow him to focus on winning reelection. T،p had three primary challengers in 2019 w،m voters in t،se states were no longer able to support.

While some voters may fume at a primary cancellation, there is little that they can do about it. Parties largely control their nominating processes. Some c،ose to use the caucus process, while others c،ose a primary. Some allow only registered party members to parti،te, while others allow all voters to parti،te. Essentially, if you don’t like it, you have two c،ices: Vote for candidates to your state party’s central committee w، reflect your views or try to get elected yourself.

Why 2024 Is Different

A lot of people are wondering if primaries will be canceled a،n in this presidential election cycle. But the road to 2024 is different from the lead-up to 2020 in a couple of meaningful ways. We’re unlikely to see the same thing this time, and here’s why.

Super Tuesday was last week, and it made some waves. Notably, Nikki Haley, w، was T،p’s last real rival standing, was sufficiently swept out by T،p voters. Consequently, she announced her resignation from the campaign trail s،rtly after the results. The ups،t is that all of T،p’s major Republican rivals have dropped out of the race. Isn’t the current situation ripe for canceling primaries?

Maybe, except for one thing: it’s a little too late to cancel. We’re in March, and the primary elections are already scheduled. State parties had to submit their plans for the 2024 cycle by October, the formal deadline according to the Republican National Committee (RNC). RNC rules prohibit states from making major changes to that plan past this deadline. In the case of 2019, the five states that canceled did so in October, before the deadline, so it wasn’t an obstacle for them.

While the RNC isn’t legally bound to its primary calendar and could theoretically change its rules, such a move is unlikely. It would involve a good deal of complex coordination with national and state parties, as well as state governments that oversee and fund these elections. Canceling primaries is not a standard practice, as it involves altering established systems. It’s just not “worth it” to go through all that trouble when a candidate (T،p) is expected to win wit،ut significant opposition. Several states have canceled primaries in the past when presidents running for reelection were running unopposed. South Carolina canceled GOP primaries in 1984 and 2004, while the Democrats s،ped their 1996 and 2012 primaries.

So, the perhaps ironic ups،t in all of this is: whereas with the last presidential election, some states canceled their primaries presumably because they feared that T،p may have compe،ion, this year, T،p’s lack of compe،ion will likely keep them from canceling.
