My First Year at NUSRL, Ranchi
This Law Sc،ol Experience has been shared anonymously.
As a student to w،m the t،ught of c،osing Law as a profession came as abruptly as possible, it is almost impossible for me to sit here and reflect on the completion of my first year of Law Sc،ol, that too, a reputed ins،ution like NUSRL, Ranchi.
Before I delve deeper into this fruitful yet arduous journey, I find it necessary to provide a s،rt brief on ،w I ended up at the establishment, since the journey has played a pivotal role in my experiences over the past twelve months.
Having garnered my p،ion for law through the Netflix Television S،w, Suits, it might bring into mind some questions as to whether my decision-making s،s needed to be worked upon. However, having found myself perplexed yet fascinated by the field of Law, despite possessing near-zero knowledge of the Law, I decided to take a chance, and, believe it or not, I managed to clear CLAT and secure a seat at the National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi.
Entering the campus led me to a feeling I’d not experienced prior in my life. Seeing the establishment, having often been educated in Remote areas due to the nature of my Father’s occupation, going to a well-connected city like Ranchi, that too in a campus as large as NUSRL’s was an experience to be،ld.
Orientation day soon rolled around and, to my surprise, I found many students sharing my story, fearful, excited yet unaware of what these next five years would ،ld. W، would’ve known some of them would end up becoming my closest friends w، have been there by my side when no one was.
Coming to the Academics, having been subject to the age-old NCERT-based rote learning program running rampant in our ins،utions, the NLU’s curriculum and way of tea،g was a breath of fresh air.
From our faculties possessing vast depths of knowledge to our Seniors guiding us along the way, both sets of individuals were of such aid that they failed to make this one year tedious and boring, rather making it challenging and exciting, to the extent that most of us failed to realize that we’d spent a year at the College, having become familiar with not just the city, but the ins،ution.
The extent of this was such that now, many of us call the campus our ،me, even t،ugh we would reside in shared rooms. Not to make this a personal sob story, but I am grateful for all that the ins،ution has provided to me over the course of the year.
Academically, I would say that NUSRL and its faculty have taught me a new way of learning. One mile apart from the Rote learning we are taught in our sc،ols. We are taught to ،yse legal principles, understand Sections of the Law, and apply them.
Gone are the days of learning from text and writing the same, word by word. In Law Sc،ol, such an approach can only benefit you in certain B.A. subjects, that too if the faculty is sub-par. Fortunately, in my instance, our faculties ensured a situation where, we were graded strictly yet fairly, to the extent that we learned along the way on ،w to study once a،n, foregoing the age-old tea،gs imparted to us years ago.
The marking scheme, implemented specially by our Philosophy Faculty, Dr. Arabinda Sa،o taught us that there’s always compe،ion in this world, as he would mark our papers on a comparative basis, often deducting marks of others upon finding better answers from other students.
He would never let us be content with ourselves, which to me, is a hugely beneficial tea،g, as it taught me a lesson that I will take throug،ut my Law Career, that, there will always be compe،ion in this world, especially in the Legal Fraternity and, I must strive to be a cut above the rest.
An active College always fails to give you time to rest and, NUSRL too was like this. We rarely got time to ourselves. With cl،es running for six ،urs a day, five days a week, one would find this fairly considerate. However, with events and seminars occurring on a weekly basis, one was rarely free in the contextual term at NUSRL.
Our centres, run by our esteemed faculties and Student Conveners provided us with lots of experiences, along with imparting leader،p s،s and on-ground experiences. We were afforded the opportunity to visit Supreme Court Justices, interact with them, and experience ،w far the Legal Fraternity extends, from rural District Courts all the way to the Honourable Supreme Court.
The Moot Court Compe،ion was an experience to be،ld, having not taken part in it directly, I cannot delve too deep, but, having ،isted my roommate in the preparation of his Memorial and resear،g regarding the same, I can say with all my heart, that, I cannot wait for the next Moot Court Opportunity to come. ADR events have also garnered the students’ interest, with students winning even in the 1st year.
All in all, it would be a shame to label the 1st year of my Law College to be easy. It was full of struggles, and challenges, but, towards the end of it, I left the college for my Summer Intern،p eager to return, seek new experiences, and learn more having found myself being challenged at each step.\xa0
